Special Needs

You are likely here because your child needs a place where his or her dental needs can be met in a safe and friendly environment, without a long wait time. Patients with special needs may be due to a physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional, and sensory impaired disorder. Individuals with special needs are known to have declining oral health because of their limited access to proper oral healthcare. We are highly trained and equipped to meet your child’s special needs.
At Pediatric Dentistry Asleep, we understand that parents/guardians of children with special health care needs (CSHCN) are usually overwhelmed with daily tasks (feeding, bathing, toileting, dressing). During the consultation visit (in person or virtual), we will get to know your child (and their special medical and behavioral condition) and his/her family (unique circumstances, strengths and challenges, previous experience with medical, dental and behavioral care etc).
Children with special healthcare needs are at increased risk for oral disease. They tend to have more unmet dental needs than children without special health care needs .The greater the medical complexity, the greater the unmet dental needs usually are.
The numbers of CSHCN are increasing. According to the American Academy of Pediatric, 10.2 million children with SHCN are under the age of 18. One in five U.S. families have a child with a special health care need.
We are here to be part of that journey. Whether your child has ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) , ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), severe anxiety disorder, previous traumatic experience, developmental and neurological disability, dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, blindness, deafness and/or any complex medical condition such seizure disorder, diabetes, bleeding disorder, heart problem etc, our team is highly trained and experienced to meet your child’s oral health needs.
Our practice will guide you to ensure the optimal oral health of your child. We discuss the impact of medical conditions on a patient's oral health, help establish a dental home with one of our partner dental offices, and provide an atmosphere of increased awareness for all parents. We discuss different preventative strategies such as dietary counseling and special tooth brushing modifications.
Our team looks forward to meeting your children and creating an individual plan catered to what works best for them.
